Capitalism - that's just like freedom, isn't it? But now imagine to wake up and capitalism is over. What has changed? Is our world a little better? What does it mean for the economy? Would we still work? And who takes decisions in the societies we live in? Let's discover it together. It is a journey through what is around us - to discover what it could be.
What identifies capitalism as an economic and societal system? How does it arose? And how has it developed? Is there a relation between the economic system and different types of discrimination? And are there actually (existing) alternatives to capitalism? If so, how could they look like in a world where injustices around us are visible, and yet we know less and less what to do about it or how a good and righteous life may look like.
In the museum landscape, all kinds of different areas are covered. Only in the field of our social organization in general, and economy in particular, there seemed to be a large gap so far.
As a grassroots project with a bottom-up purpose, the Museum of Capitalism not only breaks with classic museum objectives, but also with their representations. Historically, the narrative that has been written in and through museums, was the the story of rulers and gentry. The communication was one-sided, the content given. In contrast to that, in the Museum of Capitalism the audience is shaping many parts of the exhibition itself. The Museum of Capitalism is a place for everyone: free of charges, accessible and multilingual. A place, in which abstract interrelations are touchable and testable, in which utopian visions can be created and the contributions of visitors are changing the exhibitions constantly. It is a place which raises questions and encourages discussions as well as actions.
A change of the world has to start with an understanding of the existent. Welcome to the Museum of Capitalism!
With different backgrounds and interests we first came as friends together. We come from different countries, speak different languages and we hope that this diversity can be found in our work and in our exhibitions, too.
As a divers group of people, we create a space, which deals with the world around us. In our exhibitions, we show the relationship between the dominant economic system and its complex subjects in a low-threshold and understandable way with the aim to make it comprehensible through an active involvement with the economy and society that shape our daily lives in such an strongly way.
Our goal is to establish an interactive and open Museum of Capitalism and through our work in the field of political education, to enable others to explore ways for social participation within the society.
A project like the Museum of Capitalism requires commitment of different kinds – theoretical thinking with regards to content, practical realisation and implementation as well as organisational work. Everybody can participate according to his_her interests.
